The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
