European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
