Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.

Police report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.

The substance had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they stated.

Law enforcement then found many other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Police report initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely human blood.

"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.

Municipal representatives said they were working "to unravel the case" and have asked to the public for details.

A high-ranking political figure stated the attack rendered him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.

"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
